Pope Leo thanks well-wishers in first Sunday prayers since lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV expressed his heartfelt thanks to thousands of worshippers gathered in St. Peter's Square on Sunday for their prayers following his operation to excise a malignant tumour, adding that he intends to ease back into his daily schedule.

The crowd erupted into cheers as the pontiff stepped out at the window looking over the square. It was from this same spot a week earlier, during his weekly Angelus blessing, that he announced doctors had identified a nodule on his lung requiring surgery.
