Pope Leo makes first public appearance days after lung cancer surgery

  • The 71-year-old pontiff confirmed he will gradually resume his duties after having the lower lobe of his right lung surgically removed.
  • Medical tests confirmed the tumour was adenocarcinoma, with further results awaited to determine whether additional treatments such as chemotherapy are required.
  • His surgeon expects a full recovery shortly and stated there is no clinical reason to cancel the pope's upcoming trip to South America in November.
  • Worshippers and tourists from around the world celebrated the pontiff's remarkably rapid return to the Vatican .
