Pope Francis Calls For Ceasefire Between Israel And Hamas

Pope Francis Pope Francis attends Palm Sunday service

Pope Francis delivered his traditional Easter message at St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The 87-year-old pontiff addressed the conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, condemning war as an “absurdity.”

Despite recent health concerns, Pope Francis appeared in good spirits on Easter Sunday, delivering the “Urbi et Orbi” message in full. He had skipped a Good Friday service to preserve his health for the weekend’s celebrations, which included leading Holy Week liturgies.

Having undergone an operation on his abdomen last year and hospitalized with bronchitis, the Pope has faced health challenges. He has relied on aides to read out some speeches during periods of illness but has shown determination to participate fully in Holy Week and Easter.

During his Easter address, Pope Francis reiterated his plea for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict and called for access to humanitarian aid in Gaza and the prompt release of hostages. He also addressed the war in Ukraine, urging a general exchange of prisoners and calling on world leaders to prevent further escalation.

Expressing concern for children affected by war, the Pope highlighted the need to support those facing food insecurity and climate change impacts. He also called for action against human trafficking and greeted the crowds gathered for Easter celebrations from his popemobile.
