Poll blow for Nicola Sturgeon as voters turn against her on cost of living crisis response

A new poll has found barely one in five Scots believe Nicola Sturgeon has responded well to the cost of living crisis.

Critics have accused the SNP -led Government of a lack of support for low income Scots facing soaring energy bills.

The recent Budget announced £150 of support for households who receive Council Tax Reduction - a policy targeted at the poor.

But the Government is also giving the same amount to people living in properties in bands A-D, regardless of how much they earn.

The Poverty Alliance described the banding policy, which resembles the approach of the Tory Government, as “deeply disappointing”.

Chris Birt of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation also accused the Scottish Government of “largely copying” the Tories and repeating the mistakes of Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

A new Deltapoll, commissioned by Scottish Labour, reveals dissatisfaction with Sturgeon on the living standards slump.

Asked how well or badly they believed Sturgeon is responding to the cost of living crisis, only 21% said “very well” or “quite well”.

A much larger chunk of respondents, 44%, said they believed she had responded “quite badly” or “very badly”.

Nearly one third of those polled, 29%, said “neither well nor badly”, while 6% said they did not know.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who has made the cost of living crisis his number one issue in the council elections campaign, said:

“Energy bills are up, fuel prices are up and the weekly shop is more expensive than ever.

“Neither the SNP nor Tory governments are doing ensign to help. In fact, they are making it worse.

“Across the UK, the SNP and Tories refused to back a windfall tax on the oil and gas giants making record profits.

“Here in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has hiked rail fares and water charges and replicated the Rishi Sunak plan of giving families less than £4 a week.

“These figures clearly show that Scots can see through the SNP’s shameful attempt to use this crisis as an opportunity for a constitutional argument, rather than use their powers to act.

“While thousands of Scots are now being forced to choose between heating and eating, they are being failed by two out of touch governments.”

The poll was based on 1001 respondents in Scotland.

An SNP spokesperson said: “The SNP Government is doing everything it can to help people through the Tory-made cost of living crisis.

“But Boris Johnson holds most of the powers needed – and Scottish Labour want those powers to stay at Westminster.”
