British Army chief says politicians must start ‘frank conversation’ with public about war

  • General Sir Roly Walker, the chief of the general staff, has declared that British political leaders will soon have a frank conversation with the public regarding the sacrifices needed to prioritise national defence and security.
  • Addressing around 700 soldiers at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire , Sir Roly warned that the UK could soon require them to fight due to extreme geopolitical jeopardy and escalating global threats, particularly from Russia .
  • The head of the army stressed that the ultimate burden of land fighting falls on junior and inexperienced soldiers, emphasising that the public must understand, consent to, and actively back the military's role.
  • His comments come amid political pressure on chancellor John Healey to address a £5bn shortfall in planned defence spending and calls from Conservatives to boost defence expenditure to 3 per cent of GDP by 2030.
  • In a related move to strengthen national resilience, defence secretary Wes Streeting urged households to prepare for potential emergencies by keeping basic supplies such as cash, tinned food and bottled water.
