Policybazaar parent’s Q1 profit jumps 92% driven by margin gains

PB Fintech, which runs the insurance marketplace Policybazaar, has reported operating revenues of Rs 1,888 crore in April-June ‘27, up 40% from the same quarter last year, mainly on account of a jump in new insurance premiums, which is the mainstay of the group.

The Gurugram-based company’s net profit for the quarter jumped 92% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 163 crore as operating margins recorded significant improvement, and its Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) expanded fourfold to Rs 139 crore. PB Fintech’s post-tax profit is larger than its Ebitda because the company reports significant non-operating income — Rs 93 crore for the June quarter.

The company’s profit margin improved to 9% in the April-June period from 6% a year ago.

“Q1 is the weakest quarter in the year and Q4 is the biggest. If you are going for efficiency, the first thing you would do is hire nobody in Q1. We hired, at a gross level, 5,000 people in Q1. That explains how much we are trying to reduce costs. We are not holding back in terms of growth,” Yashish Dahiya, cofounder and group CEO of PB Fintech, said in the company’s earnings call.

“We are getting to a stage where you will see higher and higher growth in renewals because this is the previous three years of growth starting to pay off,” Dahiya added.

PB Fintech’s operating revenue rose on the back of a 41% YoY increase in total insurance premium for Q1FY27, at Rs 8,372 crore.

The company said that its core online insurance distribution business continued to be its mainstay, with revenues of Rs 1,194 crore in the first quarter, whereas its new businesses generated around Rs 694 crore. Among its new initiatives, the company counts its offline distributor-based insurance business, international operations, and corporate sales.

PB Fintech’s new initiatives vertical, which continues to be lossmaking, saw its adjusted Ebitda decline 18% to Rs 36 crore, but a sharp improvement in the core business’s profitability drove the overall bottomline expansion.

Loan disbursals through Paisabazaar hit Rs 4,366 crore, up 33% on-year. The company said that it is currently disbursing loans and credit cards at an annual run rate of Rs 17,500 crore and 370,000, respectively.

The company’s stock ended 1.3% higher on the BSE, at Rs 1,630. The results were declared post market hours, and PB Fintech had a market capitalisation of Rs 75,419 crore.
