Police warning after man in his 90s offers dogs treats that 'may be harmful' in County Durham

A warning has been issued by police to pet owners in County Durham after a man in his 90s has reportedly been offering treats to dogs that "may be harmful" to them.

Consett Police has urged dog owners in Lanchester to be vigilant following reports of an elderly male offering dogs treats that may possibly be harmful to them. Police said there have been two known incidents of a male approaching dogs and making a fuss of them before offering them a treat.

However, police have obtained photographs of the treats in question and warned pet owners to be cautious with residents likening them to plant food tablets, which should not be consumed by animals. Officers have urged people not to accept any treats offered to their dogs.

Officers are not treating this as malicious at this time and have concerns for the male's welfare. They are now appealing for anyone with information regarding the incidents to get in touch with them.

A spokesperson for Consett Police said: "There have been two known incidents of a male approaching dogs and making a fuss of them before offering them a treat. We have photographs of the treats offered and residents have likened them to plant food tablets, which should not be consumed by animals.

"The male has been described as in his 90s and has told owners he is a dog lover and has always loved dogs. We are not treating this as malicious intent at this time and have concerns for the male’s welfare.

"If your dog is offered any treats whilst out on walks, please do not accept them. Please also be mindful of dogs eating anything from the floor whilst out. If anyone has more information, please contact PC 9091 Georgia Whitfield at Consett Police Station, with reference DHM-12052022-0097."
