An ambulance responding to a 999 emergency was taken off the road by a yob who hurled stones at its windows and shouted abuse at crews inside, police have revealed. Greater Manchester Police said the incident 'subsequently prevented the crew from attending the call'.
It's understood another ambulance was dispatched in its place after the shocking attack in Bury. The incident happened in February, but details have only just been revealed by police.
GMP released a CCTV image of a man the force said officers want to identify as part of an ongoing investigation. He appears to be wearing earphones and a black and yellow jacket.
The ambulance had left Bury Ambulance Station on Birch Street, off the A56 near the town centre, when the incident happened, but no exact location has been revealed by police. Police said a man hurled stones at the ambulance's windows then became abusive to crews inside. Anyone with information is now being asked to come forward.
In a statement, GMP said: "At around 2.40pm on Sunday the 6th February 2022, ambulance crew left their station on Birch Street, Bury, en route to an emergency, when an unknown male offender became abusive to the crew, throwing stones at the windows of the ambulance which subsequently prevented the crew from attending the call.
"Officers investigating the incident are looking to identify the male pictured in the CCTV image as part of their enquiries."
The Manchester Evening News has contacted North West Ambulance Service for comment. The exact details of the emergency call the ambulance was responding to hasn't been revealed.
