Police Verification for Tenants and Household Staff: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why This Is a Legal Obligation, Not a Courtesy

Many landlords and homeowners treat police verification as optional paperwork they get to when they feel like it. It is not optional. Under the Model Tenancy Act and existing state tenancy laws, landlords are required to inform the local police station when they rent out property. For domestic workers, cooks, drivers, nannies, housekeepers, the requirement flows from standing police advisories in every major Indian city, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Failure to comply can result in a notice from the local station, a fine, or in serious cases, liability if the employee or tenant is later found to have a criminal record. The verification is not about distrust. It is about creating a paper trail that protects both parties.
