Police will confiscate the passports of 880 England fans before next month's Nations League match against Germany in Munich as part of an increased security operation around the June 7 tie.

The fixture will be England fans' first away trip since the strictest pandemic restrictions were lifted and falls a day after the D-Day anniversary, prompting fears of potential crowd trouble.

The Football Association (FA) is planning a series of messages to travelling fans to plead for good behaviour ahead of the game.

England have been given an allocation of 3,466 away tickets, although there has been interest from more than 6,000 supporters, sparking fears that many could travel without a ticket. The hope is that fewer will make the trip ticketless on a Tuesday night than for a weekend fixture, however.

Police will travel to Munich to team up with local forces, featuring six "spotters" and three or four intelligence officers, who will arrive on the Sunday before the match and leave on Wednesday.

The FA will also send 12 Wembley stewards and three members of their safety and security team to Germany.

The FA was hit with a one-match stadium ban by UEFA for the chaos which marred the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley, which will be served for Italy's visit to Molineux on June 11.

The punishment of a second game behind closed doors was suspended for a year but the FA is wary that trouble in Munich or around any of next month's four Nations League matches would see it triggered.
