Police have seized assets worth 70 million baht, including a limited edition Lamborghini, from a major gambling network with over one billion baht in circulation.
A team of officers from the Police Cyber Taskforce (PCT) arrested 14 more suspects who were involved in operating online gambling website “Gimi88’’, Pol Lt Gen Preecha Charoensahayanon, assistant national police in his capacity as PCT deputy director, said on Tuesday.
The seized assets included Aventador LP720-4, which is limited to 100 units worldwide to celebrate the manufacturer’s 50th anniversary in 2013. The supercar was worth about 50 million baht, said Pol Lt Gen Preecha.
The officers extended the investigation following the arrest of 46 suspects in connection with running the gambling website. The suspects were network members of the chairman of a southern football club, who was later caught, said the PCT deputy director.
Earlier, officers from the PCT Provincial Police Region 9 arrested the 46 suspects – 33 men and 13 women - for operating the gambling website during a raid on eight locations in Muang district of Songkhla on Feb 8.
Seized from those premises were 41 computers, 73 computer monitors, 27 notebook computers, 18 mobile phones, one iPad, 220 Sim cards and other items.
Thai media reported that the gambling website was linked to chairman of Nakhon Si United Football Club, Chanonphat Naksua, alias “Sia Krit’’. He was caught at Don Mueng airport on Feb 24, following the police raid in Songkhla in which the 46 suspects implicated him in the illegal website.
On the same day, Songkhla police arrested another man, Patchara Suphattanakul, 30, in Muang district of this southern province. He was wanted on an arrest warrant for colluding in operating online gambling. He was reportedly in the same network of Mr Chanonphat.
Thai media reported that the two men were granted on bail on Feb 25 on 100,000-baht surety each.
