Police searching for missing Suma Begum find body in the Thames

Police looking for a missing woman have recovered a body from the River Thames.

Suma Begum, 24, vanished from her home in Orchard Place, Canning Town on Sunday April 30.

Her husband Aminan Rahman, 45, is charged with her murder. He is accused by prosecutors of putting her body in a large suitcase before pushing it into the River Lea (which runs into the Thames).

The Met Police confirmed a body had been recovered in Thamesmead following a call from a passerby shortly after 10am on Wednesday.

Formal identification is yet to take place but Ms Begum’s family has been updated, the Met said.

On Tuesday, Rahman appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing.

He was assisted by a Bengali interpreter and spoke only to confirm his identity.

Judge Nigel Lickley KC set a plea hearing for July 25 and remanded the defendant into custody.
