Police searching for Melbourne woman who went missing while on holiday in Bright

Friends and relatives of a Melbourne woman who went missing while on holiday in a popular north-east Victorian tourist town say her disappearance is out of character.

Cheltenham woman Lillian Ip, 48, was last seen having a video chat with a friend from her accommodation on Gavin Street, Bright, about 7:30pm on Saturday.

Ms Ip chatted during the video call about the day trips she had planned in the area.

One of Ms Ip's friends has told the ABC all of the missing woman's belongings, except for a luxury handbag, had been found untouched at her accommodation and that her mobile phone was last detected by a mobile phone tower at Wodonga on Sunday at 4:15pm.

Inspector Chris Parr says police are reliant on the public to help form a starting point in the investigation  (ABC News: Erin Somerville)

Wangaratta police Acting Inspector Chris Parr said searchers had covered a lot of ground from Mount Beauty to Bright, and at Mitta and Wodonga.

"That search has been unfruitful and we're looking now for the next locations that Lillian could be," Inspector Parr said.

"In that rugged country it's very concerning if Lillian doesn't have the right gear with her, jumpers or things like that, but if she stays with her car we are confident we can find her."

Police have been unable to search by helicopter due to weather conditions.

"The area is so vast. We're talking about hundreds of kilometres that Lillian might be in, so we don't have a starting point at the moment," Inspector Parr said.

"Eyes from the public will be our greatest asset."

No indication of foul play

Ms Ip's phone last pinged off a tower in the Wodonga area, but police believe she might be in Mitta Mitta heading towards Bright.

She filled her car with $30 worth of fuel at a Bright petrol station on Sunday before buying something for $7 at a store in Mitta Mitta.

"Thirty dollars would be quite a bit of fuel for that little car," Inspector Parr said.

Inspector Parr said there was no indication of foul play but Ms Ip's family had concerns for her welfare because she had a medical condition and it was understood she did not have her medication with her.

"We think she might be confused or dazed and in an area with her car," he said.

Police said Ms Ip was believed to be travelling in a black Honda Jazz, registration TEP 885.

Her brother has travelled to Bright to join the search.
