Authorities are searching for a First Nations man with the word 'Menace' tattooed below his right eye who has escaped from a north Queensland correctional facility.

The 24-year-old, Tyrone Emanual Massey, who is serving five years for armed robbery, absconded from Townsville Correctional Centre on Saturday.

He is described as Aboriginal, approximately 165cm tall, with a slim build, short brown hair and brown eyes.

Massey has several distinctive facial tattoos, including 'Menace' below his right eye and 'Loyalty' above his left eye.

He also has tattoos on his left leg and both arms.

Authorities believe the man may be in the Townsville area and should not be approached if seen.

Police should be contacted immediately if he is spotted, they said.
