Police seal off road after report woman seriously injured in dog attack

Police have sealed off a street after a reported dog attack left a woman seriously injured. Witnesses say the woman was savaged by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier this morning.

Police have closed off Ismay Street in Walton, Merseyside.

Witness Kevin Cannon, 60, told The Echo he saw the attack as he was driving home at 1am today. He said: "I saw the two women in the street and I think there had been a fight. One of the women was covered in blood and the other woman was screaming 'help her'.

"The dogs were savaging the woman. I have never witnessed anything like it. One of them had her leggings in its mouth and the other had ripped off her top.

"There was blood everywhere and she had injuries to her face and neck. She was in a really bad way. The dogs were in a frenzy. They were white Staffies but were red with blood."

Mr Cannon, called the emergency services, and honked his car hiorn to try and scare the dogs away from the woman. He said one of the dogs came running over to him and he got back into his car.

Mr Cannon said: "When I saw it running over I was shaking. My instant reaction was to help but I saw the dogs were in a frenzy. I'm a single parent - if I got injured and had to go to hospital my daughter would be on her own.

"I'm an animal lover and know the staffies' instincts are to protect."

Residents said they had seen armed police in the area following the incident. They claimed there were four ambulance vehicles.

Mr Cannon added: "I think there were around 12 police vehicles including Matrix vans and police dog units.

"When the police came they rammed one of the dogs with their car and the other dog ran away in the direction of City Road. The police helicopter was up looking for the other dog.

"It's one of those things you read about or see on TV. To see it was surreal. It's sickening to have seen it. It was horrendous."

Police have not commented on the incident.
