Police Scotland probe clip of Rangers fan subjected to racist abuse from 'Hibs fan' inside Ibrox

Footage that appears to show a Hibs fan allegedly shouting racist abuse at a Rangers supporter during Wednesday's Scottish Premiership match has sparked anger among anti-racism campaigners.

The video, circulated on social media overnight following the Gers' 2-0 defeat of Hibernian, sees the fan abused by someone off-camera in what is believed to be the away stands at Ibrox.

The thug, thought to be a Hibs fan, shouts at his victim: "Ya f****** P*** c***. Ya f****** n*****."

It is captioned with more racist abuse and the number "66".

The latter is thought to be a derogatory reference to the number of people who died in the 1971 Ibrox Disaster.

A police officer can be seen in the clip, but it is unclear whether he was able to hear the sick insults and if any action was taken after the footage ends.

It is believed the target of the abuse is the only Muslim member of the far-right English Defence League, who was banned from football matches for five years in 2011 for shouting sectarian abuse.

Police Scotland says it is aware of the footage and is making enquiries into its origin.

Superintendent Emma Croft said: “Police Scotland have not received any complaints about racist abuse by spectators during the match at Ibrox during the evening of Wednesday, 10 February.

“However, we are aware of footage circulating online and enquiries are being carried out.”

One version of the clip shared on social media has been viewed more than 25,000 times since it was uploaded last night.

Hibs bosses are aware of the footage and are working to confirm its authenticity and if it is one of their fans responsible.

A spokesperson for the club said: "We are aware of a video that has circulated on social media and if the footage is confirmed to be from last night’s game at Ibrox, and connected to a Hibernian FC supporter, then we will work closely with Police Scotland to identify the individual and take appropriate action.

"Hibernian FC condemns any form of discrimination or unacceptable conduct and will continue to do everything it can to stamp it out of the game."

Supporters group Rangers Fans For Change has condemned the "disgusting" footage.

In a statement posted on Twitter the group said: "We’d like to see Rangers and Hibs do everything in their power to find this person and make sure they don’t see the inside of a football stadium again."

Rangers has been contacted for comment.
