Police say men in Clevedon who offered girls lift had 'committed no crime'

Police say no criminal offences have been committed after a suspicious incident in Clevedon this week. An investigation was launched following a report of a car stopping in Old Street on Wednesday afternoon (March 23)

It was reported that the occupants of the car spoke to two girls who were walking along the road. But police have concluded there was no criminality involved.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "Neighbourhood officers have now spoken to all those involved and are satisfied no criminal offences have been committed. No further action will be taken and there is no risk to the public."

The force added that police are aware of posts circulating on social media about this matter and asked people not to share speculation or rumour. The statement said: "Increased patrols will continue in the area but they are purely for reassurance purposes.

"If anyone has further worries or concerns, please stop one of the neighbourhood team and speak to them, or contact them via 101."

Police had previously appealed for witnesses, with a spokesperson telling Somerset Live: "Two men in a green car with a stripe down the side asked two girls walking on Old Street if they wanted a lift. The men did not get out of the car and drove off after the girls declined."

A message was put out to parents from nearby St Nicholas Chantry Primary School warning about the incident.
