Police release dashcam footage of Christmas Eve car crash as part of investigation

Police have released footage of a stolen car being driven down the wrong side of a busy Melbourne street and hitting another vehicle at high speed, as part of an ongoing investigation.

The footage shows a white Toyota travelling down Bell Street near Coburg at high speed, running a red light and hitting the front of another car turning into the intersection.

The stolen car takes the front off the other vehicle but continues through the intersection, appearing to clip another car on the way.

The footage, captured about 7:20am on December 24, has been released as part of an investigation into what police believe was a car pursuit through several suburbs involving the firing of gunshots.

"A silver Volkswagen Passat was being pursued by a stolen white Toyota RAV4 through the Moonee Ponds, Essendon and Coburg areas, and witnesses reported hearing gun shots," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

A man from one of the cars hit during the pursuit was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Separate dashcam footage earlier obtained by investigators showed the Volkswagen running a red light in the nearby suburb of Essendon, with the Toyota in pursuit.

"It appears an occupant of the Toyota fires several shots in the direction of the Volkswagen," the spokesperson said.

The Toyota was stolen from Thornbury between November 19 and 20.

The Volkswagen was found on New Year's Eve with a shattered rear windscreen, the spokesperson said, which investigators believed was gunshot damage.

Gang Crime Squad detectives have released the Bell Street vision in the hopes witnesses come forward.

Three men were charged earlier in the month in relation to the incident.

A fourth man, a 32-year-old from Cranbourne, was arrested in Maribyrnong on Friday with the involvement of Echo Taskforce and Maribyrnong Criminal Investigation Unit officers.

Police have since charged the man with a number of firearm offences. He was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on April 13, police said.

Anyone with information or footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
