Police rammed by accomplice’s Mercedes in Wennington Road, Rainham
(Picture: Metropolitan Police)A police car was rammed following a dramatic high-speed chase with carjackers in east London.
Scotland Yard said a woman, in her mid-60s, had been dragged from her Audi A3 by two young men in Trader Road, Beckton on Wednesday morning.
She suffered minor injuries during the robbery around 8am.
Met operators circulated the vehicle and 40 minutes later local officers saw it seven miles away in Wennington Road, Rainham.
The Audi appeared to be in convoy with a black Mercedes estate but this peeled off shortly after the pursuit began.
A police chase of the Audi was authorised and taken over by tactical trained officers.
The Mercedes returned and rammed one of the police cars into the central barrier in Marsh Way, Rainham.
Two officers received minor injuries and were later treated and discharged from hospital.
Two police vehicles were damaged. The Audi made off and was later found abandoned nearby.
The Mercedes driver ran but was chased and arrested by officers. He is believed to be in his 20s.
His car was found to have been stolen from the Essex area earlier.
Police closed roads while emergency services dealt with the collision but it has now reopened.
Inspector Richard Wenham, of the Met’s Road and Transport Policing Command, said: “Officers have done their job and quickly circulated and located a stolen car.
“This incident shows our commitment to arrest those engaged in criminality and the risks officers can face when they do their duty.
“This sort of courage and dedication by officers goes on every day in London and it deserves to be recognised.”
