Police are trying to find information about a mystery sedan after a stabbing victim was dropped off at a Melbourne hospital and died minutes later.

The maroon Volvo arrived at Casey Hospital at Berwick in Melbourne's outer southeast about 7.30am on March 26.

A man driving the car got out and called for paramedics to help, before pulling out the unconscious stabbing victim, later identified as 45-year-old Port Melbourne man Daniel Cockerill.

Mr Cockerill had a stab wound on his upper body and died minutes later.

The driver sped off, with police suspecting there was also a second passenger in the car.

Police initially arrested a 40-year-old Port Melbourne man over the incident, but released him without charge.

Homicide detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the Volvo's movements at the time to come forward, along with anyone who can identify the second passenger.

They are yet to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Mr Cockerill's death.
