Several suburban streets in Lake Macquarie were shut down overnight after police received reports of a shooting.
Residents in Bolton Point and Fennell Bay were told to avoid the area and stay inside just after 4pm on Wednesday, July 8 as police launched a large-scale operation.
The Newcastle Herald can reveal that police were called out to "shots fired" and worked to quickly close down the area to investigate the claims. A significant police presence was seen on Quigley Road and nearby Threlkeld Drive.
Officers were still at the scene about 6pm, but a spokesperson for NSW Police has since confirmed that after "extensive canvassing of the area" it could not be determined if the shooting had taken place.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman also confirmed no paramedics were called to the area.
"At this time, no reports of property damage or injuries have been made to police," a police statement said.
"Local hospitals have been contacted, with no reports of any person presenting with gunshot-related injuries."
Police have now launched an appeal to the public for any information that could help progress the investigation.
