Cops have locked down a stretch of the most dangerous road in Scotland after a single-vehicle crash this afternoon. Emergency crews raced to the A82, on the west side of the loch, shortly after noon today, with police closing the road between Invermoriston and Drumnadrochit.
Paramedics and fire crews are also in attendance, but it is not known if there are any casualties from the crash. The SFRS teams are waiting for maintenance workers to arrive, as an electricity pole has been damaged in the incident.
A 120-mile diversion has been put in place, and drivers using the A82 have been advised to use an alternative route and expect longer than normal journey times. It is not known how long the road will remain closed.
For traffic travelling northbound to Inverness, vehicles will be asked to turn and proceed southbound on the A82 to Spean Bridge. They will then turn left onto the A86, then left again onto the A9 and follow the road to Inverness. Traffic will then turn left onto the A82 and continue to Drumnadrochit.
Southbound, the diversion means traffic must go northbound on the A82 to the A82/A9 Junction in Inverness, turn right onto the A9, then turn right onto the A86 at Kingussie and follow the road to Spean Bridge. They must then turn right onto the A82 at Spean Bridge, and head towards Invermoriston.
The distance of the diversion, both north and southbound, has been confirmed as 119.4 miles by Traffic Scotland.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Officers were called to reports of crash on the A82 close to Invermoriston at around 12.10pm on Tuesday, 19 July 2022. Emergency services are in attendance and the road is currently closed with a suitable diversion in place.”
Two crews from the fire service are in attendance, but are waiting for maintenance staff to attend, due to an electricity pole that has been damaged in the incident.
A spokeswoman for the SFRS said: “We were called at 12.21pm and two crews are in attendance. We are waiting for staff from electricity providers to assess if a pole that has been damaged is live.”
