Police issue update after passengers racially abused on bus before driver is spat at by 'aggressive' man

Police have issued an update after passengers were racially abused on a bus before the driver was then spat at by an 'aggressive' man on Tuesday evening (June 21).

Officers were called out to the incident on the 98 Go North West service, between Shudehill Station and Bury to reports of racial abuse.

Greater Manchester Police announced on Tuesday night that the man had then gone on to 'spit' at the driver before he was later found dancing at a bus stop and arrested.

In an update, the force has confirmed that the suspect has been bailed pending further investigations and are urging witnesses to contact the GMP Transport Unit.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 6.15pm yesterday (Tuesday 20 June 2023) officers were called to reports of racial abuse on the number 98 bus.

"A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially or religiously aggravated assault. He has been bailed pending further investigation."

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have been on the bus at the time. Anyone with information is asked to contact GMP Transport Unit on 0161 856 8155 quoting incident 3476 of 20/06/23.
