A man is in police custody as detectives continue their inquiries into the death of a teenage boy in Sydney’s south-west.

The 15-year-old’s body was found in bushland in Wilton at about 7.25am on Saturday.

Following a public appeal for information, a 32-year-old man was arrested after presenting himself at Narellan police station shortly after 4pm, New South Wales police said.

No charges had been laid and inquiries were ongoing.

Acting Supt Tim Calman earlier said police were unsure what happened but the boy had been at a camping area with about a dozen “associates”.

“In this early stage, the timeline we believe [is that] something happened on the Friday evening, but the exact time is still under investigation,” he said.

“The information we have at this stage is they may have been camping in that area.”

Asked how many people were at the campsite alongside the alleged victim, Calman said he was not sure.

“I do not have the exact number. Perhaps a dozen of them.”

He said police were speaking to witnesses and canvassing the local area.

Calman added that there was “evidence at the scene” that indicated the death occurred close to the campsite.

Emergency services responded to reports that a body had been located in the area. Officers from Camden police area command secured the area as they awaited the arrival of specialist police.

Police closed Wilton Park Road and established a crime scene, as investigations continued.

The boy’s family had been informed, but formal identification was due to be completed in the coming days. Calman confirmed that the boy was local to the Picton area.
