Police are investigating after a man was found unconscious in an alleged assault in Cardiff on New Year's Day. A 57-year-old man, who is from the Cathays area of the capital, was found injured and unconscious near the Cathays Sports and Social club, formerly known as the Liberal club, in the early hours of January 1.

A spokesperson for South Wales police confirmed investigations into the incident are ongoing. In a statement, they said: "Police in Cardiff are investigating an alleged assault upon a 57-year-old man from the Cathays area of the city who was found unconscious near the Cathays Liberal Club in the early hours of January 1. He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales where he was treated for his injuries. Investigations continue."
