Police in Spain seized cannabis worth £57m in a series of raids across the country. The Civil Guard said it was the 'largest ever' haul of the drug worldwide.
The 32 tonnes of cannabis were discovered in bud form, with police saying it would be equivalent to more than a million complete plants. Nine men and 11 women aged between 20 and 59 have been arrested.
They were taken into custody following raids in Toledo, Ciudad Real, Valencia and Asturias last month. Details of the arrests - known as Operation Gardens - were shared by police on Saturday (November 5).
Police said the drugs operation was run by different companies carrying out different aspects of the process. This included buying the seeds, planting them, care and maintenance, storing the dried cannabis buds in warehouses.
The Civil Guard alleges they were then vacuum packed ready to be sent across Spain and to countries including Switzerland, Holland, Germany and Belgium.
Police said in a statement: "The Civil Guard has seized the largest cache of packaged marijuana found so far. The operation has concluded with the seizure of 32,370.2 kilograms of marijuana buds, the largest seizure of this substance, not only in Spain, but also internationally.
"Its equivalence in complete plants would be approximately 1,100,000."
