Police in Lanarkshire name second man killed in horror Rutherglen car crash

The family of a man who died in a horror late night car crash in Rutherglen have spoken of their heartache.

Driver John Laird was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he died a short time later following the late night roadsmash last Friday, November 18.

The 80-year-old's friend and passenger in the car, Michael McManamon, 73, was also killed in the accident.

Thepairhad been travelling in a Mercedes C220 which was involved in a crash with a Ford Mondeo around 11.50pm on Rutherglen's Mill Street at the junction with Kings Park Avenue.

The 34-year-old male driver of the Ford Mondeo was not injured and has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Mr Laird’s family told Lanarkshire Live “We are heartbroken and shocked at the loss of our much loved John, a husband, father and grandad.

"He will be sorely missed.

"We are comforted by the kind messages from friends and family who knew him well and appreciated all he did for them.”

Residents on the street where the accident took place have told of their horror after the tragedy.

One local who lives at the scene told Lanarkshire Live : "We heard a loud thump outside and didn’t know what it was.

"We went down to have a look and saw that it was serious.

"The police and ambulance were on the scene very quickly, and the road was closed off - it didn’t open again until nearly lunchtime on Saturday.

"You get the odd bump at the lights every now and then, but I don’t remember anything this serious happening before. It’s very, very sad."

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder, Lanarkshire Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts remain with both deceased’s family and friends.

“Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge anyone who may be able to help and who hasn’t yet spoken to police to get in touch."
