Police officers have been given extra powers to crack down on anti-social behaviour in Barry town centre as half term begins in Wales. South Wales Police said, as of Monday, February 20, officers have been granted the extra powers to deal with anyone involved with anti-social behaviour.
The dispersal order is in place for 48 hours until midday on Wednesday, February 22, and applies to everyone, including youths. The order, which is granted under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, covers the area outlined on the map below, including Thompson Street, Merthyr Street, and Holton Road in Barry town centre.
Police officers and PCSOs will be able to instruct anybody who is causing, or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to leave the area. They will also have the power to seize any property which officers suspect is being used to cause ASB. Local Policing Inspector Mark Henderson from South Wales Police said: “The dispersal order is in place as a preventative measure.
“We will have an increased presence in the area and officers won’t hesitate to enforce the extra powers afforded to them in order to keep the community safe. This dispersal order is in response to anti-social behaviour witnessed on Kings Square over the weekend.
“We urge parents and guardians to speak to their young people about not getting involved in anti-social behaviour during this half-term.” Anyone with information or concerns about this matter, is asked to contact South Wales Police, quoting refence number 2300056877.
