Police have found a seven-inch knife which had been dumped in a children's play area.
The blade had been in bushes in Victoria Park in Denton, Tameside, on Tuesday. It was found during a 'weapon sweep' of the park, according to police.
Today Greater Manchester Police (GMP) published a picture of the knife and said the discovery may have prevented an injury to a child or dog.
GMP's Tameside South and West Facebook and Twitter accounts today released brief details of the discovery.
With a picture of the knife, the posts read: "During a weapon sweep of Victoria Park in Denton, a knife has been found and seized from within a bush in the children's play area...
"Another knife off the street and unable to cause serious injury to an unsuspecting child or dog."
Replying on Facebook, Amy Davies wrote: "Oh wow, It's a good job they found it before a child did!"
In an unrelated development, Tameside police also revealed that, alongside trading standards and environmental health officers from Tameside Council, cops had conducted a number of 'spot check' on licensed premises in nearby Droylsden.
They said 'illegal vapes' worth an estimated £3,500 had been seized. Last year Greater Manchester Police, which had been a 'failing' force, was lifted out of 'special measures' by the government's policing watchdog.
It followed a 'back to basics' campaign by Chief Constable Stephen Watson, who replaced his predecessor in May 2021.
Mr Watson had blamed a 'failure of senior leadership' for the force’s problems and promised a 'dialled up muscularity' in his approach to crime, leading to GMP being moved out of special measures in October.
