The man shot by police was taken to Westmead Hospital but died a short time later.
A knife-wielding man launched a "frenzied attack" on a cleaner at a Western Sydney train station before he charged at police officers and was fatally shot, police say.
Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said the 32-year-old man entered the turnstiles of Auburn Train Station just after midnight, where the cleaner "was just going about his duties".
The 28-year-old cleaner "just happened to be the first person there", and was set upon "without warning", Assistant Commissioner Smith
The first attack caused a puncture wound to his left forearm and he fell to the ground.
"It continued with a further frenzied slash," Assistant Commissioner Smith said, adding the victim sustained another injury to his hip.
Just minutes later the assailant was standing outside Auburn Police Station "hyperventilating," Assistant Commissioner Smith said.

Two police officers who had received a phone call about the stabbing incident opened the glass doors and attempted to exit but were forced to retreat inside when the man rushed at them.
A senior male officer quickly drew his weapon and fired three shots, two of which hit the man's chest.
The man fell to the ground and continued thrashing before he was subdued and taken to Westmead Hospital where he died a short time later, Assistant Commissioner Smith said.
The stabbing victim was also taken to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

This morning, detectives and forensic officers could be seen gathering evidence at Auburn Police Station.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting will be examined as part of the "critical incident" investigation, which will also be reviewed independently.
So far police have confirmed the deceased man had come to Australia from India on a student visa and was residing in the Auburn area.
Assistant Commissioner Smith said the incident was traumatic for the officers involved, and the attack was an isolated act.

A criminal investigation is under way by police
"It's part of our model in terms of response," Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith says.
"Obviously, when someone arms themselves with a knife, stabs an individual and then tries to attack — which the CCTV footage is highly concerning.
"It would have been a stressful situation for the officers. They had no alternative but to respond.
"When that's involved, it triggers a number of intelligence responses and investigative responses which we're dealing with as we speak."
"He arrived in Australia on a student's visa from India in 2019. He remains in that processor visa," Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith.
"We are reaching out or investigators from the critical incident led by homicide are reaching out to the Indian consulate so he can confirm his identity.
"That process is expected to be delayed."
NSW Police are now taking questions. The first was about the man's previous interactions with police.
"COVID inspections confirming he remained at his address in Auburn," Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith says.
"It will be led by homicide," Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith says.
"There is significant response to this. It includes a large contingent of investigators from south-west region and includes some counter-terrorism stuff, real-time intelligent centre, assisted by intelligence, have worked through the night to build a profile.
"We can say the man had five interactions with police, none of them criminal, during the COVID period."
