Vehicles were being stopped by police at checkpoints in and around Greater Shankill last night (Wednesday February 15). The PSNI have taken to social media to explain why they were set up.
Police North Belfast published pictures on their Twitter and Facebook pages showing officers talking to drivers of stopped vehicles in the area. They explained the checkpoints were part of the force's road and public safety focus.
"Officers from Tennent Street Neighbourhood Team are out conducting vehicle check points this evening in the Greater Shankill area as part of our road and public safety focus," the posts read. They were accompanied by the hashtag #KeepingPeopleSafe.

Officers had been on foot patrol earlier in the day. Their presence was a response to a rise in anti-social behaviour and drug use in the area over the last few days.
A Facebook post yesterday afternoon read: "Neighbourhood Officers have been on foot patrol today in the Shankill Area of North Belfast to provide reassurance to residents and business owners after an increase of anti-social behaviour and drug use in recent days. If you see anything suspicious please call us on 999 for an emergency, or on our non-emergency number 101."
