Police descend on Burrs Country Park as boy, 14, pulled from water

Police, paramedics and specialist water units descended on a park in Bury on Sunday evening (June 4) as a teenage boy was pulled from water.

A huge emergency services presence was pictured at the Burrs Country Park, near Brandlesholme, following reports that a male had 'fallen' into the water.

The Manchester Evening News understands the incident occurred after the teenager had been 'playing on the railings with friends'.

He sustained injuries in the incident, thought to be a broken leg, as police blocked off entrances to the park. It is understood he fell into the feeder canal to Elton Reservoir that runs alongside the park.

Pictures showed a number of police vehicles, fire engines, a technical response unit, a water rescue unit and an ambulance at the scene before the 14-year-old was rescued on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 6pm this evening the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service responded to reports that a male had fallen into the water at Burrs Country Park in Bury.

"He sustained injuries and was taken to hospital, although thankfully his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life changing."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added: “Just before 6pm this evening (Sunday 4th June), one fire engine from Ramsbottom fire station along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton were called to reports of a person falling in the water at Burrs Country Park.

“Crews arrived quickly at scene. Firefighter wearing drysuits used a rescue sled and stretcher to rescue a 14-year-old boy from the water. Firefighters treated the boy at the scene before he was taken to hospital by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and a half. ”
