A person has died and an elderly woman airlifted to hospital after a two-vehicle crash south of Darwin on Sunday.
Emergency services were notified of the serious crash on the Stuart Highway, near the Batchelor Road turn-off, around 12pm.
Authorities have since confirmed a person died as a result of the crash.
In a statement, NT Police Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said another passenger, an elderly woman, was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital by a CareFlight helicopter.
He said detectives from the Major Crash unit were now investigating the crash.
Earlier in the day, NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services urged motorists to avoid the area while crews worked to investigate the scene and clear the wreckage.
Police did not release the age of the victim.
One eyewitness driving past the incident said traffic in both directions was being diverted, with a CareFlight helicopter attending the scene.
There have now been 49 lives lost on the Northern Territory's roads since the start of the year, which is 14 fatalities higher than 2021's total.
