Authorities have confirmed that a person has been taken into custody and is being questioned in relation to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of US Today news anchor Savannah Guthrie.
In a major update to the case that has gripped the world, the PIMA County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed it “detained a subject” in relation to the abduction of Nancy.
“Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies detained a subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson,” it wrote in a social media post.
“The subject is currently being questioned in connection with the Nancy Guthrie investigation.”
Per CNN, the person was taken into custody near the US-Mexico border in Rio Rico.
The County Sheriff’s update comes shortly after FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed investigators were looking at multiple individuals as a “person of interest” in relation to Nancy’s disappearance.
Patel also shared a plethora of CCTV footage of a masked man on Nancy’s doorstep that was “recovered from residual data located in backend systems”.
“Working with our partners — as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” Patel wrote.
No charges have been laid. However, the County Sheriff’s Department said more information will be released as it becomes available.
The 84-year-old mother was last seen at her home on January 31 and was reported missing the next day after she failed to attend church.
A series of alleged ransom letters sent to media outlets — including KOLD News 13 and TMZ — came under review, with FBI special agent in charge Heith Janke stating it contained “no proof of like”, but included a dollar amount and two deadlines: 5pm Thursday, February 5 and Monday, February 9 (US Time).
Savannah, alongside her siblings, Camron and Annie, has shared multiple videos pleading for their mother’s return. In her most recent video, the TV host thanked the public for their “love” and “prayers” as they wait for Nancy’s return.
