POLICE commandeered a jet ski overnight to rescue two fishermen clinging to a sinking boat at Lake Macquarie.

Two men, aged 41 and 32, were fishing from a tinny about 500 metres north of the Marks Point Marina at about 11pm on Sunday when the small boat suddenly became unbalanced and capsized.

The two fishermen were tossed into the water when the boat flipped and were forced to grab onto the underside of the vessel to try and stay afloat.

Neither of the men were wearing life jackets, police said.

They managed to dial triple zero as the tinny slowly sank and they struggled to stay above water.

Police officers called to the scene were able to commandeer a jet ski and two life jackets from a neighbour, and found the men holding onto the boat.

The men were given the life jackets to help them until another neighbour came out in their own boat and helped police get the two men safely back to shore.
