With an impending heatwave across much of the States, we’re not the only ones overheating.
It turns out that the heat is putting an extra strain on our household appliances — especially if we’re running our cooling fans and air conditioning units for longer than usual to keep comfortable.
But if you notice an unusual or ‘fishy smell’ inside your home, an expert has warned that this should never be ignored. This is because it could be an early indicator that your electrical components are overheating and need immediate attention. And if left unresolved, this can risk sparking a hazardous electrical fire or permanently ruining your equipment. Here’s everything you need to know this summer.
Why can I smell a fishy smell?
According to an expert, an unusual smell could be an early indication that household devices, outlets, or internal wiring are currently overheating. But why does this often cause a metallic or fish-like scent?
“A fishy or metallic smell throughout your home may seem unpleasant yet harmless; however, you shouldn’t ignore it,” advises Ben Rawson, Electrical Heating Expert from Electric Radiators Direct.
“When electrical components such as wires or outlets overheat, the smell produced can often be fishy. This smell indicates potential overheating and, in worse cases, electrical fires.
“During periods of hot weather, when many households are relying on fans and cooling appliances for longer periods, it’s especially important not to ignore this smell.”
What’s more, during a heatwave, any extra warmth generated by your household devices makes cooling down your living space much more difficult.

What should you do to fix this?
Whether you notice a metallic odor, or simply want to take preventative measures, what are the first steps to follow?
“To avoid electrical fires, turn off and unplug any appliances that were recently in use as a first step,” advises Rawson. “Following this, avoid using outlet sockets, switches or extension cables that feel warm to the touch.”
In addition, if you suspect electrical faults or damage, always call in a professional to do the relevant checks or fix any issues — instead of attempting a dangerous DIY fix.
“Don’t attempt to fix the electrical issues yourself,” adds Rawson. “Call a qualified electrician to diagnose the problem and make repairs.
“Smells are often overlooked in the home; however, they can be one of the earliest warning signs of serious problems. Acting quickly and putting preventative measures in place not only protects your health and safety but can also save you from costly repairs down the line.”
So if you ever notice a ‘fishy’ aroma wafting through your home — assuming you aren't preparing dinner — you might well want to have an expert inspect your household devices this summer.
