“A fishy or metallic smell throughout your home may seem unpleasant yet harmless; however, you shouldn’t ignore it,” advises Ben Rawson, Electrical Heating Expert from Electric Radiators Direct.
“When electrical components such as wires or outlets overheat, the smell produced can often be fishy. This smell indicates potential overheating and, in worse cases, electrical fires.
“During periods of hot weather, when many households are relying on fans and cooling appliances for longer periods, it’s especially important not to ignore this smell.”

What should you do to fix this?
Whether you notice a metallic odor, or simply want to take preventative measures, what are the first steps to follow?
“To avoid electrical fires, turn off and unplug any appliances that were recently in use as a first step,” advises Rawson. “Following this, avoid using outlet sockets, switches or extension cables that feel warm to the touch.”
In addition, if you suspect electrical faults or damage, always call in a professional to do the relevant checks or fix any issues — instead of attempting a dangerous DIY fix.
“Don’t attempt to fix the electrical issues yourself,” adds Rawson. “Call a qualified electrician to diagnose the problem and make repairs.
“Smells are often overlooked in the home; however, they can be one of the earliest warning signs of serious problems. Acting quickly and putting preventative measures in place not only protects your health and safety but can also save you from costly repairs down the line.”
