Police close road as youths 'throw fireworks at vehicles' in Bonfire Night disorder

POLICE have closed a road in Edinburgh after reports of “youths throwing fireworks at vehicles”.

Since around 7.30pm, Niddrie Main Road is closed between Duddingston Road West and Duddingston Park South.

The force said extra resources have been dispatched to the area to help local officers.

It comes after police confirmed officers are executing stop and search orders in three Edinburgh communities on Bonfire Night – Niddrie, Moredun and Gracemount.

We told how Lothian Buses have withdrawn a number of services in Niddrie in anticipation of anti-social behaviour, after last year saw riots break out in the area.

Police are bracing for another night of disorder, after riots broke out in Niddrie on Bonfire Night last year.

Fire crews were attacked and eight police officers injured in disorder which saw petrol bombs and fireworks thrown at riot police.

Officers in Edinburgh have revealed the city’s dispersal zones, which became enforceable from 2pm on Friday until midnight on Tuesday.

These will be in place in Gorgie, Saughton, Oxgangs, Liberton, Gilmerton, Gracemount, Portobello, Niddrie, Moredun, Muirhouse, Craigentinny, Pilton, and the city centre.

When the dispersal zones are in place, officers can order groups to disperse, leave the area unless they live there, and stop them from returning for a period of time.

Specially trained riot officers are also being deployed across Scotland to combat disorder.

Niddrie is part of a Firework Control Zone, making it a criminal offence to set off fireworks unless licensed through the Edinburgh council, from November 1-10.
