When questioned about the gender identity of one of the individuals involved, Chief Barnes stressed that such details were not relevant to the current situation.
Chief Barnes stated, 'I don’t know whether Natalie was transgender or not. And quite frankly, I don’t think that’s important at all. I don’t think whatever happened today has anything to do with how she or he or they may want to identify.' He urged individuals using social media to refrain from injecting personal biases into their posts and to avoid spreading misinformation.
He expressed frustration with inaccurate information circulating online, emphasizing that such content was unhelpful in the aftermath of a tragedy.
