Police charge 16-year-old alleged driver over Canberra car crash that killed two teenage girls

A 16-year-old boy has been charged over a car crash that killed two teenage girls in Canberra's south on Sunday.

ACT police say a Toyota sedan left the highway and crashed through a row of temporary fencing before hitting a tree near Lanyon Drive at Hume.

A passer-by found the wreck and alerted emergency services who found two girls, aged 14 and 15, dead in the car about 8:10am.

It's not known what time the crash occurred, but it may have been hours before emergency services were alerted.

Police allege a 16-year-old boy was the driver of the car and that he fled the scene of the accident.

He's been charged with two counts of culpable driving causing death.

He's also been charged with breach of bail, breach of a good behaviour order, driving as an unaccompanied learner, and failing to stop and render assistance.

The teenager faced the ACT Children's Court this morning where he didn't enter a plea.

He did not seek bail and it was formally refused.

He is due to face court again later this month.

Car left 'unrecognisable'

Police investigating at the crash site on Sunday described the car as so damaged that it was hard to determine its make and model.

"The car has sustained extensive damage to the point where it is unrecognisable," Detective Acting Inspector Brian Tadic said.

Police are still trying to determine the cause of the accident and what role speed and wet weather may have played.

"Obviously the impact was quite severe so speed may have been a factor," Detective Acting Inspector Tadic said.

Police have urged anyone who may have seen the car leave the road, or who drove past the crash site and saw the car before 8am, to contact Crime Stoppers.

The two deaths bring the ACT's road toll for the year to 14.
