Police call for public assistance after man found dead on Pialligo Avenue near Canberra Airport

The ACT has recorded its third road fatality in 2022 after a man was found dead on Pialligo Avenue in Canberra last night.

The man is estimated to have died between 10pm and 11:30pm on Sunday, and ACT Policing is calling for members of the public in the area at the time to come forward and assist their investigation.

Acting Officer in charge of ACT Road Policing, Acting Inspector Ken Williams, said the man's body was located by a police unit attending the scene after they received a call reporting an incident.

Acting Inspector WIlliams also said very little was currently known about the circumstances surrounding the man's death, but an investigation was underway.

"At this stage, we don't have too much information so we're seeking public support and assistance," he said.

"We would really like any dashcam or video footage that any members of the public have, if they have anything, could they please save it to their devices and contact CrimeStoppers to make it available to police.

He said the need for public assistance in the case was due to a lack of evidence at the scene to explain what had happened.

"Normally there's a lot of indicators that happen where we can actually piece together what's occurred, unfortunately on this occasion, there is none of those," he said.

"[All we know is] a male person was walking along Pialligo Avenue, and an incident has occurred, and that he's now deceased. It appears that he was walking from the ACT towards Queanbeyan.

Acting Inspector Williams encouraged ACT road users to take extra caution when diving in the dark.

"Our message to the public is to look out for vulnerable road users, and just take extra care especially when travelling late at night in low light areas," he said.

He also called for any parties that may have been involved in the incident to come identify themselves to police, for the sake of the man's family as well as themselves.
