A 34-year-old man from Neath has been arrested over an assault that has left a man critically ill in hospital. The man is being held on suspicion of Section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent.
Police were called to Commercial Street near Arch nightclub in Neath at 12.50am on Friday, July 15, to reports of a serious assault on a 47-year-old man. The Welsh Ambulance Service sent two rapid response vehicles, one emergency ambulance and an emergency medical retrieval and transfer service. You can see live updates here.
The man was quickly taken to University Hospital Wales in Cardiff where he remains. Police say he is in a serious condition, his family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

On Friday morning, two police vehicles were at the scene continuing to monitor the blocked road from Commercial Street to The Parade. Two police cordons were covering both roads on Friday afternoon - one outside the Arch bar and club on Commercial Street, and the other at the Bluebell Hotel at The Parade.
Police then closed the road leading to the hotel while forensics carried out investigation work at both locations which are within a stone's throw of each other.
The police are appealing for help from anyone who may have seen anything. In a statement posted on Facebook on Friday afternoon, they said: "If you were near The Arch Bar & Nightclub around 12.50am this morning and have any information in relation to the assault please contact our Major Crime Incident Team via https://orlo.uk/tbhoy quoting reference 2200236046."
