A male has been arrested after a “suspicious package” was found near a police station and medical centre in Burgess Hill. Armed police were called to the discovery near The Brow yesterday (July 28) at 1.48pm.
Officers from an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to the incident, with a 100-metre cordon put in place. Emergency services from West Sussex Fire and Rescue also attended the scene.
A heavy police presence was captured in footage shared on social media, with five emergency vehicles seen along just one small stretch of road. Crowds gathered to watch officers assess the situation and speak with people following the incident, with some crews staying at the scene for several hours.
The fire service said earlier in the afternoon that the surrounding roads would remain closed and urged people to avoid the area while investigations were taking place.
Sussex Police said: “A man has been arrested after a suspicious package was reported in The Brow, Burgess Hill, this afternoon. A cordon remains in place while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team assesses the situation.”
The force later added: “We can now confirm the Explosive Ordnance Disposal has successfully destroyed the suspicious package found in The Brow, Burgess Hill, earlier today. Final searches are being carried before the cordon can be lifted. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
