Police and firefighters called to emergency incident in Durham city centre

Emergency services were called to Durham city centre following concerns for a person's welfare.

A number of police cars, fire engines and ambulances were called to Elvet Bridge at around 7pm tonight (July 4).

Durham Constabulary confirmed they were called to the incident following concerns for a man's welfare.

A force spokeswoman said: "Police were called shortly after 6.20pm last night (July 4) to reports of concerns for the welfare of a man in Durham City. Officers were joined by colleagues from the fire service at the scene.

"Thankfully, the man was located safe and well and taken to Durham City police station."

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that they sent two crews to the scene but were later stood down by police.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to the Elvet Bridge in Durham shortly after 7pm this evening out of concerns for a person's welfare. We dispatched two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team, who were later stood down by the police."

A Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said that crews attended the incident.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "Crews from Durham were in attendance. Firefighters were called at 7.10pm to assist police."
