The Kanto Pokédex is filled with some of the most recognizable Pokémon in the franchise. Many have received new forms, evolutions, or other updates over the years. Others have barely changed since their debut.
That has led fans to wonder which Kanto Pokémon deserve another chance in the spotlight in "Winds and Waves."
One Reddit fan recently shared several ideas for Kanto Pokémon that could receive new evolutions or regional forms. The list includes forgotten Bug-types, Team Rocket staples, and Pokémon that never quite lived up to their potential.
Venomoth Could Finally Get a New Form
Venomoth stands out as one of the Kanto Pokémon most in need of a fresh design, according to the original poster on Reddit.
The fan proposed a Bug/Psychic regional form for the Pokémon. The concept also plays on its connection to Sabrina in the original games.
Sabrina is known as a Psychic-type Gym Leader. Yet Venomoth is a Bug/Poison Pokémon. Giving it a Psychic typing could create an interesting connection that has existed in the background for years.
Cloyster, Dodrio, and Rhydon Need More Attention
Cloyster is another Kanto Pokémon with plenty of room for a new evolution.
The proposed concept gives Cloyster another layer to its shell. That extra shell could even function almost like a separate creature.
Dodrio could also receive a creative regional form. One suggestion takes inspiration from the extinct moa. Its three heads could work together to create the appearance of one much larger head.
Rhydon is another interesting case. While it eventually received Rhyperior as an evolution, the fan felt the design did not match what they expected from Rhydon's evolution.
A regional Rhydon could lead to a new evolution that better fits that original vision.
Fearow Could Take a Darker Direction
Fearow has often been overshadowed by Pidgeot. Some fans know it's time for Spearow to receive a deserving buff after many years.
A new regional form could finally give the Flying-type Pokémon a stronger identity.
Several typings could work. Ghost/Flying could emphasize its intimidating appearance. Dark/Flying could make it feel more aggressive. Fighting/Flying could highlight its combat-focused side.
These ideas also fit Fearow's tougher portrayal across the Pokémon anime and games.
Team Rocket Favorites Could Get New Evolutions
Several Pokémon associated with Team Rocket also appeared in the discussion.
Weepinbell could receive another evolution focused on defense and survival. Lickitung could take a stranger route, with its tongue becoming almost sentient or even carrying disease.
Drowzee could receive a Ghost-type regional form or a brand-new evolution.
Arbok could also get a regional form inspired by real snakes, including whip snakes or kraits.
Fans Have Plenty of Other Ideas
The discussion did not stop with those Pokémon.
Some fans suggested a Rock/Water Crystal Onix that could eventually evolve into a Steel/Water Crystal Steelix. Others proposed a Bug/Fairy Butterfree inspired by the famous pink Butterfree from the anime.
Eevee also received an unusual suggestion. One fan imagined a Dragon-type regional Eevee that could evolve into physical-based types that currently have no Eeveelution.
Other Kanto Pokémon mentioned included Psyduck, Dewgong, Jynx, Farfetch'd, Paras, Goldeen, Pinsir, Krabby, Tauros, and the Nidoran lines.
Does Kanto Really Need More Pokémon?
Not every fan agreed with the idea.
One commenter argued that Kanto has already received more attention than other generations. From that perspective, newer generations should get priority when it comes to new evolutions and regional forms.
It's still interesting to know that popular Kanto Pokemon like Charizard and Blastoise kept on getting new forms, yet some mons from the Gen 1 region aren't receiving the same treatment. Maybe The Pokemon Company needs to take a closer look at how to make them relevant once again.
