'Pocketed Sterling' - Manchester United fans left 'baffled' after Donny van de Beek display

Manchester United fans were again left questioning the decision to allow Donny van de Beek to move away on loan after watching his performance against Manchester City.

The midfielder impressed again for Everton, having joined the Toffees for the remainder of the season on deadline day of the January transfer window.

Van de Beek worked tirelessly as Frank Lampard’s side gave the league leaders another scare after their defeat to Tottenham last weekend.

The Netherlands international provided his side with plenty of impetus as they came close to taking the lead during the first half, and did his defensive duties with aplomb, keeping Raheem Sterling in particular quiet.

The 24-year-old went off injured with around 20 minutes to play, which may cause a concern for his new side, although his parent club will have been impressed with his latest showing.

Without Van de Beek, Everton weren’t able to hold on for the point as Phil Foden pounced on Michael Keane’s mistake to earn City a 1-0 win, although they had to survive a controversial penalty shout when Rodri was adjudged not to have controlled the ball with his arm by VAR.

Nevertheless, United fans were impressed by Van de Beek’s display, and were left questioning their own club yet again.

Van de Beek spoke earlier this week about his start at Goodison Park, and how he aims to prove himself again during his time on Merseyside.

"For my motivation every day, I remember where I started,” Van de Beek told Everton’s website.

“I always think about this – and always believe there is another way to go up again.

“I believe in my qualities and know what I can do.

“I have all the time to do it again and it is up to me to show it.”
