Pochettino eyed, Potter twist: Next Tottenham manager shortlist emerges amid Antonio Conte doubt

Mauricio Pochettino continues to lead the race to replace Antonio Conte following Tottenham's early exit from the Champions League. The Italian boss was met with a chorus of boos from Spurs supporters at full-time as AC Milan waltzed through to the quarter-final.

The north London outfit have now failed to win any of their previous five Champions League knockout fixtures since a 3-2 win over Ajax in May 2019 when, ironically, Pochettino was last in charge. Conte sees his contract with Tottenham expire at the end of the season and, while the club hold the option to extend his tenure by a further year, it appears increasingly likely that Daniel Levy will not trigger the said clause.

The Argentine is one of numerous candidates who have been linked with taking the reins at Spurs, as well as Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi. Some reports have even floated the idea of Jose Mourinho making a shock return, though he was far from among the favourites to say the least.

But, after fans in the South Stand at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were heard singing Pochettino's name last night, Betfair have released new odds on Conte's replacement. The Italian has been branded as most likely to be the next Premier League boss to leave their role this season.

The Argentine remains favourite to be the next permanent Spurs boss at 11/8, with Tuchel second most-likely at 5/1. De Zerbi, who has impressed at Brighton this term, has come in at 11/2 with Thomas Frank at 8/1.

Odds of Paris Saint-Germain boss Christophe Galtier taking the helm are priced at 12/1, meanwhile Massimiliano Allegri, Vincent Kompany and even Graham Potter have entered the frame at 14/1. Fresh doubt has been cast over Conte's future after he admitted that Daniel Levy could very well sack him before the end of the season.

Following the defeat to Milan, the under pressure Tottenham boss made an intriguing claim on Italian TV. He said: "My contract expires in June. We will see — they might sack me even before the end of the season, who knows, maybe they are disappointed."

Then, when pushed on his future in his post-match press conference, Conte, as he has done several times this season, reiterated that it will be at the end of the season when he and the club will make a decision. He said: "This is not right day to speak about future but my future.

"I have a contract with Tottenham and then Tottenham know very well which is my thoughts and at the end of season we will meet and then we'll make a decision."
