Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the ongoing BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi, with Xi saying India and China should view their relationship from a strategic perspective and keep the long-term development of ties in mind.
“China-India relations have developed, with both sides keeping in mind the long-term development of bilateral relations from a strategic perspective,” Xi said during his meeting with PM Modi.
Xi said that although China and India are different, the two countries have been able to “support and help each other to achieve common development.”

“I am very happy to attend the New Delhi BRICS summit and to meet with you again. I extend my warm congratulations on the success of the BRICS summit held in India,” the Chinese President said.
Modi thanked China for its support during India’s BRICS chairship.
“I express my gratitude for the support and cooperation received from China during India's BRICS chairmanship. We now have the opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation,” PM Modi said.
The meeting marks Xi’s first visit to India in nearly seven years and the third consecutive year in which the two leaders have met, following their meetings in Kazan and Tianjin.
The meeting is expected to offer fresh signals on the future course of India-China ties as the two countries seek to move beyond years of strained relations following the eastern Ladakh standoff.
