PlayStation VR2 to launch in February for £529

The wait is finally over to discover when the next-generation PlayStation VR will hit the shelves. This greatly anticipated gizmo goes on sale from 22 February 2023, albeit that eager fans can pre-order the device from the PlayStation Store from November 15.

Sony also says that people can register to pre-order from today onwards – whatever that means – provided that they are based in the US, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands or Luxembourg.

The PS VR2 will cost from £529 and this doesn’t include the controller charging station, which adds £39 to an already sobering price-tag. For context, the actual PS5 will set you back £379 for the purely digital edition or £479 for the version with an optical drive. Assuming, of course, that you can find one.

To be fair, this shiny new VR headset does boast some impressive specs on paper. These include a new 4K HDR OLED display with 110-degree field of view and a buttery smooth refresh rate of 120Hz. The fancy eye-tracking technology sounds promising too.

There will be at least 20 games available at launch. These include The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR and Crossfire: Sierra Squad alongside the previously announced Horizon Call of the Mountain, which even has its own bundle deal.

It’s too early to say whether the PS VR2 represents value – and much depends on what you compare it to. The Meta Quest 2 is currently £399 but the Pro version costs an eye-watering £1,499.

We can finally see what the next chapter of VR gaming will look like and the future feels exciting.
