PlayStation Plus Games Catalogue July: new titles announced

Sony has announced a bumper crop of games coming to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue this month.

Subscribers to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium will get access to 15 additional PS4 and PS5 games in July, while Premium members can play an additional three retro games from Sony’s PS1 and PSP consoles. They will all join the Game Catalogue on July 18.

What are the highlights? Undertale is the best-reviewed game of this month’s titles. It’s an influential indie game we highlighted in our list of the 20 games to play while self-isolating, back in 2020.

“Simple graphics, beautiful characters, catchy music, and some pitch-perfect writing combine to make Undertale an absolute joy to play. Perhaps one of the funniest games ever made, you won’t be able to step out of Undertale and you’ll no doubt be thinking about it long after the credits roll,” we said.

It Takes Two is the other critical hit. It won Game of the Year at the DICE Awards and The Game Awards. However, you’ll need someone else to play along with as this is a co-op-only game.

The other player can be in the same room, using classic couch co-op, or online.

For single-player fun, we recommend trying Snowrunner or Sniper Elite 5. Snowrunner is a challenging game in which you carefully drive an off-road vehicle across uneven, snowy terrain. To some, it will seem a bit too much like a parallel-parking simulator, but it has a large and devoted fan base.

Sniper Elite 5 is a pulpy war game with some truly gross kill animations that show your bullet passing through the air and into the enemy, in slow motion. You’ll want to keep this one out of the hands of younger family members.

PlayStation Plus Premium members will also be able to play Gravity Crash Portable from the PSP, and both the original Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2 from the PS1.

The Twisted Metal games were highly popular in the US, and the series is about to return in an unusual form — a comedy TV series starring Will Arnett.

How PlayStation Plus works

If you’re subscribed to PlayStation Plus Essential, you won’t get access to any of these games.

These titles are part of the Netflix-a-like Game Catalogue. Essential members only get to play PlayStation Plus’s monthly games, which we wrote about at the end of June. This month’s titles are Alan Wake Remastered, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and Ending — Extinction.

All three tiers of PlayStation Plus membership, Essential, Extra, and Premium include access to these titles, so claim them now.
