Sony announced this morning that it would be pulling the plug on Firewalk Studio’s Concord, making it unavailable to purchase on any online store. Servers will also be shut down on September 6th, only two weeks after its launch.
Players who purchased the game online will automatically receive refunds. Press Start reports that EB Games has contacted EB World members to inform them they’re also eligible for a refund on physical copies.
In an interview with IGN, GameDiscover analyst Simon Carwell revealed that the game had sold only 25,000 units across PlayStation 5 and PC. Forbes later reported that the game peaked with only 697 players on launch day, fewer than Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
Ryan Ellis, Firewalk Studios’ game director, said in their announcement, “While many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognise that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn’t land the way we’d intended. Therefore, at this time, we have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players.”
Concord has been the punching bag for gamers since its announcement at the PlayStation Showcase. The trailer showed off some of the game’s characters and sense of humour, but the general public was left unimpressed.
Current Concord players are finding creative ways to obtain the game’s platinum trophy. This includes jumping off the roof at the start of the game, ending matches in seconds to grind experience faster.
It’s hard to say what Concord‘s future will hold. The game is set to have its own dedicated episode in Amazon Prime’s Secret Level series, building on its characters and lore.
While the report’s wording hints that the game might return in some capacity in the future, it’s tough to see how it will ever recover its reputation from its launch. Even if the game goes free-to-play, its core fundamental issues will still exist, and likely struggle to find a dedicated player base in an already oversaturated market.
RIP Concord, we hardly knew ye.
